Computer crashes

Oh, no. After running 24/7 for 33 months, and running 4 cores out of 8 on prime gaps, my Dell XPS 8700 computer crashes for no reason, It will run for 90 minutes or so from cold reboot, before it crashes. Event 41 Kernel power, task 63, according to the event log. It even crashes eventually if no prime number applications are running.

My computer runs an i7-4770 x64 3.4 Ghz.

My guess is that it overheats, and so I have given the insides a good clean to clear out dust etc., but it still crashes.

Before I take further action, what do you experts think? Is there an easy fix? What is the likely cause, and should I try to get it repaired? What will need replacing?

Could be a broken fan on the graphics card. You should check (after cleaning) that it still run's smoothly. You could remove the graphics card entirely and use the "onboard" graphics inside your i7-4770.

Another possible cause may be a faulty power supply.

Need to troubleshoot, especially if it is getting on for 3 years, there could be several potential causes.

So the system has been cleaned, have you checked the fans are all spinning well?

For starters, download and run something like hwinfo64 which should be able to get the sensor info and get you some CPU temps. See where they end up when running Prime95 stress test. It would also be interesting to see if Prime95 stress test throws up any errors, if so, at what FFT size?

As your computer is only 3 years old I doubt it will be the power supply. I think it could be the hard disk that is crashing. Install a monitoring tool. I use "hard disk sentinel" and like it a lot. Also, install a monitoring tool for your CPU temperatures like "core temp".

Try to get more information about the crash. In the following article Microsoft explains how to do that : https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2028504. (The article is about Windows 7 & 8 but I am almost sure this applies to other versions as well.)

My guess is there is a good chance it is the power supply. My average is probably less than 3 years per power supply since I started prime hunting.
