After all the arrogance shown by "Bob Silverman" on this board recently I did a quick google search hoping to find out more about the "legend".

After all if he is that important then google will rank him number one right?

Just out of curiosity I did a google search on my name (Gordon Spence) - came out numbers 1,2 and 3.....

That was a good thought... I had never thought to put my own name into a Google search! Hits 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 were me!

If you ever apply for a job you may rest assured that your new employer will do so

And if you ever need to 'store' some information like your favourite recipe or the birthday of your aunt, there are some exceptional ways to do so. Just post a message to alt.test or similar containing your data and some unique id-string like 'xavion-2003-12-08-aunt'. If you do not issue a cancel-message fast after the post, that information should propagate through the newsservers and you can retrieve it anonymously from everywhere worldwide later. Some curious scientists may even dig up that information in a thousand years from old databases found in the radioactive rubble of their deceased ancestors.

But of course that is only a thought experiment, because alt.test is not inteded to be used that way and 'storing' your aunts birthday this way would probably qualify as an abuse of the group

It didn't work with my name, but when I put my student number into Sympatico, the first thing that came up was the page that contains my mark from my first algebra midterm.

Putting my name into Google turned up "about 5,080,000 results"

qwertydex.com comes back with over 250 results for my name in my city (with surrounding cities turned on)

Quick true common name story-
When we bought our house, the sellers had the same last name. The house was part of an estate, so the kids were selling it. I had the same name as one of the kids... The "Closer" had never seen so much paperwork, the amount of stuff that we had to sign saying I wasn't the kids selling, and the sellers had to sign a bunch of stuff saying they were not the buyers...

...the joys of having a common name.

I think you should cut him a little slack. The context was that I had just pitched ElevenSmooth on the grounds that it furthers, at least in priniciple, the Cunningham Project. He laughed and asked if I knew who he was. I had misread his "AFAIK"; there is a Bob Silverman, apparently this one, that already knows a great deal about the Cunningham Project. I know about that Bob Silverman because I read the book. In particluar he is mentioned in the Third Edition Introduction for contributions to P-1, ECM, and NFS factors.

Tone is hard to read in a text-only medium. Certainly bemusement was appropriate on his part. Stronger attitudes deserve a bit of slack on that basis.
