In USSR, in December issues of the "Science and Life" magazine in the math column (or on the back cover), the e.g. "1985 puzzle" (or whatever the next year was) was usually announced and people snail-mailed their long lists. Similar rules, but iirc with factorial and exponentiation, so one could go up to 100 and frequently beyond...
