The crazy mechanic guy who lived next door to my parents was given to grandiose jokes. My next younger brother and his friend filled a thin cleaner's bag with gas from the tap, arranged a slow fuse, and turned it loose. The neighbor heard them saying, "It's caught in the tree. Run!" However, setting off a ball of methane is not really that explosive. More like a flash burn, and inefficient.
However, on another occasion, the neighbor, who had a large mechanic shop in his garage, filled some sort of large plastic bag with oxyacetylene from his welding rig. Nobody was hurt when it went off and shook the neighborhood. Injuries were more likely when his wife realized nobody had been hurt, and that the participants were laughing about it. Initially, she was afraid to open the door and see if the garage was still there. A short while later, the police came cruising past, and he ran out to the street shouting, "Oh my god! Did you hear that?" Last fiddled with by kladner on 2016-10-12 at 23:45 |

Picked up two old computers today, both completely free. Built in 2006, D6600 processors, so fairly power-inefficient by modern standards, both have disks of 320GB and GbE; one has 6G RAM, the other has 8G.
One will be to replace the house server (a freecycled single core P4, 1G RAM, disk with bad blocks) and the other to wean SWMBO off Windoze and on to Linux, which is why Mint was installed earlier today. SWMBO currently has 32-bit Win7 on a Q6600, 100MbE, 240G disk and 2G RAM so I'm pretty sure that the new kit will be an upgrade from her POV. It will also allow me to log in remotely and run ECMNET clients

Any chance you can collect any others and bin them for the raw materials to produce BBC Microbits? |

But the line is "Reduce. Reuse. Recycle... If the old kit is unreliable, and/or consumes a lot of energy, perhaps it should simply be recycled. |
