Default i5 760 with v28.9

Hello all prime95 users,

I decided to make my first post on forum. I begun using prime95 after 2000s on my different computers with cpu like sempron, c2d and i5 760.
Computer I am still using is i5 760 with Asus P7P55D-E MB. I tuned this pc last in 2011. For my curiosity I tried some weeks ago last Prime95 v28.9. .
I tried to run blend test with V28.9 and I still get random crashes (windows error Prime95 has encoureted error, or rounding errors), sometimes in 30 mins,
sometimes in 8 hours or in 16 hours. I am amazed, because if I used 26.6 version computer is able to run it for 24 even 48 hours without error.
I tried also use custom test FFT size 8 - 4096 kB and 4GB ram without any problem in 26.6. I used the computer overclocked 16x21 from the beginning. But errors
in 28.9 are comming even on stock settings.
I also used to try Memtest86 for 24 hours without error for RAM (2x4 GB Crucial Balistics sport)

I would like to ask you if there could be some practical explanation for it.

Thank you

With best regards

majk

A lot of optimizations were made since version 26.6, for instance using AVX. Also, version 28.9 does threading in a different way, using multiple cores in parallel on a single exponent.

So perhaps it's triggering a pre-existing issue that was not triggered by the previous versions or by Memtest.

Install some temperature monitoring software.

Clean out the dust from your computer, especially around the heatsink and its fan.

If the temperature is still a problem, you may need to re-seat your heatsink onto the chip with some new paste.

Check that your PSU is giving acceptable voltages -- see in BIOS.

I5 760 doesnot have AVX instruction set.

Hello all,
I do not have and never had problems with this computer. I run Prime v28.9 only coincidentally since it was very long time when I used Prime last. When I run v28.9 temps were according to HWmonitor info: temp over cores 55-57°C, with overall CPU temp 61°C max and thats all with ambiemt temperature 27 - 28°C in room.
I begin to lean to conclusion by user GP2 that it triggers something what was not triggered before. Maybe.
At the end of this post I must say big thanks to all participating users. I really enjoy specialized forums like this.

Regards

If it is not temperature that is the problem, there are a few things you might try out:

Flash the latest BIOS.

Check PSU voltages.

Overvolt the CPU by a very tiny amount.

Ditto the RAM.

i5-750 here.
Installed in 2010, has gone through several Prime95 versions from 25.x to 28.5, presently.
Never had any problem with this setup, except for some faulty RAM replaced a couple of years ago.

@OP,
I don´t think your problems are related to the version of Prime95 you´re currently running. As the temps are within spec, make sure the RAM is OK. If I were you, I would also check the sanity and stability of the power supply. If it´s still the original one, it may be retiring time, who knows?

I will check voltage under load of the power supply, which is actually Enermax Liberty 500W. Good PSU in its days, maybe is weaker, over seven years old.
