Default Move 40 discussion: Everyone vs stockfish

The poll for move 39 will close in a few hours, and there are currently 7 votes in favor of Rxf6. There are no votes for any other moves since no other moves have been suggested. Unless something unheard of happens, the most popular move will be Rxf6 when the poll closes later today. Stockfish responded with 39...Rhc2, and the FEN is:
6k1/1R6/5R2/4n2p/7N/6P1/r1r5/6K1 w - - 1 40

Game so far: 1.e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nd2 c5 4. Ngf3 Nf6 5. exd5 exd5 6. Bb5+ Bd7 7. Bxd7+ Nbxd7 8. O-O Be7 9. dxc5 Nxc5 10. Nb3 Nce4 11. Nfd4 O-O 12. Nf5 Re8 13. Nxe7+ Rxe7 14. f3 Nd6 15. Bg5 Nc4 16. I'll be going on vacation later this week and will return on June 7. My internet connection will likely be spotty and unreliable during that time, and I definitely won't have access to Stockfish. Since everyone has been playing for a draw, I offered a draw to SF, which it accepted (draw offers were declined before move 39). It may be premature, but you guys did a really great job on this. Congratulations on a very well played game!

Here are the options:

- Accept the draw and start the other version of the game (18. Rab1 Qe6: http://www.mersenneforum.org/showthread.php?t=20926). I'll post a screenshot of SF's evaluation of this position if this option is chosen.
- Decline the draw offer and play just this game until it ends
- Decline the draw offer and play both versions of the game at the same time

In any case, I won't be able to post SF's response until June 7. However, I don't have a problem with someone making a poll to see what the most popular move is for move(s) 40 / 19b in order to speed things along.

Outstanding! I'm all for the draw! I had hoped that we would be able to draw this variation in 40 moves or less so this is a great result!

I'm all for starting the other game but I have two "real" vacations planned (not business trips). One for June 16th-26th and the other for July 7th-16th. I will have no internet access on the first one and limited access on the second one.

I would be in favor of starting the other variation of this game in mid to late July. I'm thinking that others (in the Northern Hemisphere) may also have some summer vacations planned. But I understand if the consensous is to start the other game sooner...just putting in my two cents. I'll go with the flow.

I am for the draw too, and also for a break before starting the other variant.
Congratulations to everybody participating in the game.

Now, as I said from the beginning, we were lucky first when SF chose the defense, then second because we used the online DB. In a "face to face", I don't see myself standing against SF (yes, I tried, since I downloaded it!).

I agree with accepting the draw. And having time off until mid July is fine with me too.

the draw is probably the best we can do if analyses are correct. I'd also rather time off because I'm in the process of moving and it's a pain even without the social assistance system getting annoying.

Yes, I too agree with taking the draw.

Well played everyone!

And MooMoo2, thank you very much for hosting this game so efficiently and reliably. You never once failed to play our moves on time and report the reply. Given that you were a single point of failure in this game, your never-failing efficiency was extremely valuable. It's great that you're going to host the branch-off game from move 19 as well, but have a well-earned vacation first!

Moo Moo, a sincere thanks for all you did!

To the players of this game a sincere thanks as well. I learned a few things.

A draw it is.

I'm in NY for a couple of days and will probably play a game or two in Washington Sq.and possibly visit Russian Paul.

No problem. Here's some game stats.

Lowest depth searched: 34 ply
Highest depth searched: 50 ply

Lowest number of nodes searched: 662,431,557
Highest number of nodes searched: 61,374,728,949

Search rate: 1.5 - 2M nodes/sec. One core was used.

Stockfish 7 was released approximately halfway through the game, but SF 6 was used throughout the game for consistency.

This was not the first time that SF rated a position as 0.00. I don't know how it decides whether or not to accept draws or to play for a draw, but I think it accepted the draw in this case because there were too many pieces off the board and too many moves and different ways for the game to end in a draw. For move 40, Rb8+ would have been the quickest way to get a draw (see attached; SF would have accepted the 3-move repetition this time). However, Rf1, Re7, Rb1, Rf5, Rb4, Rb3, and Rb5 also have an evaluation of 0.00 and would also lead to draws. Earlier in the game, there was less of a margin for error, and more exact play would have been required.

The missing spaces in the table above will be filled in once the next game ends. It'll be restarted in mid-July.
