As mentioned earlier, I can change the Open With default:

Properties will allow me to set the default to gedit, but why should I have to use:
Code:
Properties > Open With > gedit > Set as default > close Properties > Open
to edit a file and then:
Code:
Properties > Open With > firefox > Set as default > close Properties > Open
to look at it with Firefox?

edit: I forgot to mention that there is an "Add" button, that doesn't do anything, on the bottom of the Open With tab.

Do any of these coders actually use their own products?

Hmm, I found some convoluted hacks on the web.

I noticed that you can drag an *.html file into a gedit session window. HTH

Now, that is VERY helpful! Thank you! I can drag and drop into Firefox and gedit with ease. I just need to have them already open - not quite as troublesome...

And, at least for now, CTRL-z/y still allow undo/redo...

I'm a bit happier now.

I still use Ubuntu and then switch back to gnome 2.
Here seems to be one of the ways of getting it

Maybe similar is available in other Linux distributions.

You are not switching back to Gnome 2, not directly at least. MATE is the fork of Gnome 2, and is available in basically all major distributions.

What I really want is the old Compiz goodies available in Gnome 2, with some of the new window snapping features from Cinnamon.
