So the Khronos Group have recently released Vulkan as a kind of next-generation OpenGL and OpenCL, built from the ground up. One of the things that stands out is that it aims to simplify drivers and hence reduce overhead and otherwise be very high performance. Now, I haven't done enough research into it, having only just discovered it, but might it be of potential use for GIMPS in the future?

Vulkan evolved from AMD's Mantle. It's a replacement for OpenGL, OpenGL ES, DirectX, etc. It's for graphics.

Oh right, just that it mentions compute systems as well, hence GPU-based computation.

As far as I know, OpenCL is still the standard for that.
