First things first. :)

It's a non-critical machine and just easier to do things in root whilst troubleshooting.

I can't seem to get mprime to quit. killall mprime and it still shows in top.

I think I understand the rest about using screen, but I need to restart mprime somehow as it does not appear to be doing anything according to top. It's at the bottom of the cpu usage list at 0.0%, maybe stopped or idle somehow?
Interesting. Try killall -SIGKILL mprime.

Finally got it to quit using kill -KILL 1580 I think that's the equivalent of threatening it with a baseball bat...

Okay, think I have it. mprime is at the top of the cpu % usage list where I would expect it. I'll watch it for a day or two and see that it stays running.

I had an extremely similar issue with the non-GUI version: http://mersenneforum.org/showthread.php?t=12605
