On a more related note, I wonder how many other universities will want some free PR and start running it too in the hope of finding M50.

How much does the free electricity cost to gain the PR?

Well if they also manage to get a government grant for a solar and/or wind farm, they could run it on renewables and get double publicity (though they might get PETA annoyed at them).

I don't know if he saw different results than I do (searching at https://startpage.com/, an anonymizing proxy to Google), but when you search for "gimps", the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search and the GNU Image Manipulation Program make up the first 7 links. Only the 8th is related to the derogatory term.

Or, more likely, he didn't do the search himself and was just making a joke.

I don't remember hearing many comments before (e.g. earlier prime discoveries) about "GIMPS" being an "unfortunate acronym" or jokes (like Matt's in the video here) about its "other" meaning. Has "gimp" become more offensive recently or something?

Default Holy cow!!!

Wow! We're seeing ~500 DC Cat 4, and ~90 LL Cat 4, assignments an hour at the moment!!!

Aaron, can you give us an idea as to how the sign-up delta is looking?

Definitely this news release has had good "traction"!

Edit: Actually, make that 644 DC Cat 4 assignments in the last hour!!!

I suppose that it is derogatory, like "cripple." Around here, Dan and I use it as a rueful self-description.

I've seeded a few followup and secondary articles I know are slated for later this week. My press contacts love a tech/nerd story where no one is trying to sell anything :)

Aaron, any chance of a dump/graph of new user sign ups?

Um, I think you might be missing the more sexual meaning.

I must admit that when I first learned of the GIMPS project, I did wonder why such an ... unfortunate accronym was used. Somewhat like the chosen name for the 7th planet in our solar system.

Indeed I was. My ignorance of popular culture is showing. I only know 'of' Pulp Fiction, which is cited for this meaning.
However.....

When describing someone who is lame, gimp is used with disparaging intent and perceived as insulting. But within the disability community, it is sometimes a term of self-reference.
