also, what is the output of `mount`?

It's possible the usb drive is mounted with the noexec, which would prevent files from being run.

That sounds like a very good security measure, unless you really want to run something from a removable. A flash drive is probably how Stuxnet got into the Iranian nuclear facilities. Of course, that was with a Windows front end......
