The dorms in UCLA (and most Uni's) have hi-speed network connections.

I am living in an apartment unit, not a dorm.
However, I've discovered a problem. Ever since leaving home, my most powerful home computer has not communicated with the server at all, even though I instructed it to communicate with the server daily. The LL test it was doing when I left should be long done by now. What could be the problem? |

It may have picked up a new exponent and is now doing the factoring and/or P-1. Once it finishes that it should report normally.

That computer still hasn't returned any results. According to my dad, the computer has now finished 2 exponents since I left. But it seems to be unable to communicate the results to the server.

Finally, the computer made a successful Manual Communication (I asked my dad to do it). Unfortunately, it seems 2 weeks of computing have disappeared without a trace... Still it's better than losing the entire computer from GIMPS.

Unfortunately, the computer has stalled, again! No updates since Oct. 13. It should have finished its exponent 5 days ago!

Since you're no longer there to supervise it, it's taking a break from Prime95 duties.

It had been working flawlessly for almost two years before I left! I guess its time for another talk with my dad...

More oddities! On my Individual Account Report page, it incorrectly states that my new laptop is 596MHz, when in fact it is 1596MHz. This is not a serious problem, but...
Well, the main problem continues to persist. Its especially frustrating, because it is a powerful producer: 3.055GHz. I've had an instant messenger conversation with my dad about it: duruxu: Here is what the Prime95 said: "unable to open spool file", unable to open log file jinydu: Is there an error number? duruxu: No jinydu: Has it stopped running completely, or is it just unable to communicate? duruxu: it says "will try contracting server again in 60 minutes jinydu: But I mean, is it still running a prime test? Is the iteration number increasing? duruxu: No jinydu: Hmm, how about this? Go to Test-> Exit. Then restart Prime95. duruxu: Exit is done. Now I cannot find where is the Prime95 jinydu: Go to Start -> All Programs. It should be there somewhere duruxu: Ah, it is running now jinydu: Ok, good. What exponent is it testing? duruxu: 13009309 jinydu: Ok, what is the current iteration number (approximately, since its constantly changing)? duruxu: 11010900 jinydu: Ok, so it has made some progress since it last updated the server. Now, could we try a Manual Communication? duruxu: tried jinydu: Hmm, didn't see any change in the status. Did it say "Done Communicating with Server", or was there an error message? duruxu: There is no error message this time jinydu: Strange, there's still no change in status. Did you remember to check the box saying "Send new expected completion dates?" duruxu: Just did that jinydu: Hmm, ok, try this jinydu: Go to Options -> Preferences jinydu: Change "iterations between screen outputs" to 10000. That should stop the numbers moving (more precisely, slow it down by a factor of 10000) duruxu: Yes, it does jinydu: Ok, now you can try Manual Communication. Please tell me everything that it says. duruxu: It says "done communicating with server" duruxu: nothing else jinydu: That's just strange... I've got just one last idea. Go to Test -> Stop. The icon should turn yellow. Then, go to Test-> Continue, turning it back to red. Then, Exit the program (Test->Exit) and reopen in a different user account. Then, try Manual Communication. duruxu: Well, as I do "continue", it gives a message "error writing intermediate file: rD009309 duruxu: "Error opening results file to output this message:" duruxu: "Unable to open log file," duruxu: "Execution halted." duruxu: "Choose Test/Continue" to restart duruxu: "ERROR: Unable to open spool file" duruxu: "Resuming primality test of M130093909 at iteration 11004801 [84.59%]" jinydu: Hmm. That's lower than 11010900, the number you gave me before. Therefore, it must have been unable to write a save file. This is not a trivial problem... duruxu: "[Oct 24 07:22] Iteration: 11010000/13009309 [84.63%]. Per iteration time: 0.030 sec." duruxu: My typing may not be very accurate. |
