Default nfs.dat and nfs.log

After using yafu extensively, I have an enormous nfs.dat and nfs.log file. As in, nfs.log is 2 GB and nfs.dat is almost 9 now.

If I delete those files, what effect (adverse or otherwise) will it have on numbers where I paused the nfs. I'm ok with restarting the nfs algorithm on those numbers; I just want to know what leeway I have in clearing some space in my factoring folder.

Thanks for any help you can give.

nfs.log is only a log file, and may be cleared at your will (if you don't mind losing the logs in the file).

nfs.dat stores the relations used in the algorithm, and should be cleared automatically by YAFU every time you start a new number. Having said that, 9 GB is a totally plausible amount of data to be generated for a single number. What size number are you currently factoring?

Looks like 124 digits. I quit the number because I'd set up a small program (a couple of linked programs actually) to run whole home prime sequences and I'm just going about 100 steps into each sequence I'm running before moving on to the next one.

That sounds as if you havn't set yafu up to use NFS, so it was using QS for the C124. Which is much slower than NFS for a number that size.

As far as I know, Yafu will automatically go into poly selection, then get an error and stop if the sievers haven't been set up. I could be wrong, but I've never seen it automatically go into QS for anything above the tune information.
