I came into an old single-core machine a while back. I thought I could use it for trial factoring. I'm trying to use v24.14 on it but I can't get the syntax right in the "worktodo" file. It wants to run everything to 2^80. What is the format?

If you are manually creating the file then it goes like this

Factor=N/A, 902465969,66,67

It might take a while on a cpu, on a GTX-660 that test takes just over 8 seconds

GPUs are so much better at TF than CPUs that it really doesn't make sense to do TF on CPUs any more. Especially on an old single-core CPU. You might want to run, e.g. ECM, P-1, DC, another project entirely, or nothing at all. (especially if you pay for your electricity, it can be hard to justify spending twice as much power on 5% more work done, for instance)

Older versions (which I think includes v24) don't support a how_far_to_factor_to option, so it chooses automatically.

For the numbers here, it's choosing 80. If you still want to TF, you should use the latest version of Prime95, which should still work on your old CPU.

My primary system is an Athlon64 X2 granddad. 1.9 GHz. GPU-Z says the nVidia adapter does not support any GPU ops; SLI is disabled. GeForce 7300-GS. Not many options with it.

The old machine was just an idea. Thank you all for replying!

With v24 you also have the option of using AdvanceFactor for exponents smaller than 20,000

You'll have to check the undoc.txt or readme.txt files for the exact syntax....it is different syntax than factor=

In my experience it is also more generous with credit.

If you can find some more recent graphics cards, that machine is still a good host for doing GPU computing. Just make sure the power supply can support the cards you plug into it. In particular, check the 12 volt rail.

I am not certain you need the N/A section with 24.14. I think that was introduced with the v5 server.
