I'll speak to these issues a little bit, but not much. These are my opinions only.

"discuss those things":
There is some discussion. There is this thread that you've spawned which is open for discussion in a subforum dedicated to addressing issues. Many actions do lead to threads here for discussion, especially bannings. I created a thread here myself when I was quite irked.

"there would be a lot of noise and fire (flames ?)":
I do not agree that this would be ok. This forum gathers unique individuals with specialized mathematical capabilities and experiences. Irascible messages have driven some of them away. I consider these individuals to be irreplaceable.

"Management by obfuscation is not my thing":
I do not believe that obfuscation is occurring. Rather than intending to confuse or bewilder, I believe that the forum is managed in a way to lower the heat and maintain decorum. I note that you mean you would not like things to be obscured.

"I can understand though that not everybody is a Don Quixote or that more important things deserve more energy.":
I agree. The purpose of the forum seems to me to be that of coordinating diverse factoring and computational efforts, seeking prime numbers and noting achievements, while discussing enough topical events and mild recreational diversions to help maintain a human connection between the members.

"emptying a post an hour after publishing it or deleting it.. WB (Why bother) ?":
In this I would point back to the the intent not to obscure. It seems to me, that by having a record that a person has posted, it reduces the temptation to post inflammatory things and then retract them as if they were never posted before other parties can adequately respond. Shenanigans may still occur, of course, but it may be apparent that something was posted, even if subsequently changed.

Regards,
Ross

My guess, and please note that it is only a wild guess and I have absolutely no inside knowledge or anything, is that there was some incident or series of incidents which motivated the decision to turn off deletion capabilities. Maybe it was along the lines of what only_human mentions in his last paragraph above.

If so, the issue could then perhaps not very easily be discussed in public by admin or supermods here without compromising confidentiality.

It would, however, have been good to officially announce this change (with or without explanation).

It happened quite a while back (2 years ago or more). It was noted and commented on then.

Indeed I have not posted actively for quite some time and thus had no need to sometimes delete a post just made.

Even when I did not post I read but I do not remember this setting was discussed, bad memory probably. I would be interested in the the discussion and comments of that time, problem of a search is that the word delete will bring quite a lot of answers. (I search before starting this thread.)

I WANT to know WHY on Earth that button was disabled! PLEASE enable it again! Even though I don't have any posts that need deleted atm, I want to be able to delete my posts when I want to do so, not wait for a mod to do it!

This reminds me of a Queen song - I want it all, and I want it now!

So just like the naked celebs 'concerned' about their pictures being accessed by unauthorized people perhaps we should simply not put things onto another person's computer unless we are confident it won't hurt us in any way.

Link(s)?

I can't believe that I didn't notice it when it happened? Or maybe I did and forgot about it?
