A new generation of Xeon is out...

Spanning four to 18 cores and up to 3.6 GHz base clock rates, Intel is enabling CPU models that are optimized for many different markets. Thermal design power ratings range from 55 to 145 W on the server side, and as high as 160 W for the Xeon E5-2687W v3 workstation part.

Let me clarify: yes, the memory bandwidth per core is worse if getting an 18 core CPU, but if choosing a CPU with the same number of cores, the bandwidth per core situation would be better with the new platform, would it not?

Doesn't that depend on the bandwidth of DDR-4 versus DDR-3?

2133 MHz should give ~14% more bandwidth than 1866 MHz. So that's an improvement over the old Xeon platform. Not an improvement over desktops that support 2133 MHz and faster memory speeds though.

Mmm, Primo with 72 threads. Not very cost effective, but sounds fun.

So far I haven't seen anything quite tempting enough to make me want to upgrade the 3770K/4770K and 3930K. Lots of stuff to drool over (5960X, v3 Xeons) but once price and price-benefit (for my work) enters in...
