Good question.

I think 29...Bxc3 is a good reply. We lose the exchange if they play 30.Bxb8 but after 30...Nxc5 we keep the e pawn and I think we have reasonable drawing chances. Or if 30.Rb1 Bd4+ followed by ...Bxc5 should be okay, I think.

Perhaps simpler, because it's more forcing, is 28...Nb3 29.Bf4 Nxc5 30.Bxb8 Bxc3 now I come to think of it. We will have two pawns for the exchange after we pick up their a pawn, and with only their g and h pawns left it will be very hard for them to win the endgame.

29.Bf4 is of course a critical move which I had not specifically considered before Paul mentioned it. It's a pity we haven't had time to discuss it amongst the four of us. We are in fact pretty much out of time now, with under 6 hours before our deadline, so while David naturally makes the decision as captain it would seem to me that we must just play the move 28...Nb3 which we all agreed on before. I still think that's the best move myself, anyway.

Are you around to play our move, David? I shall be around at the deadline just in case you are not here.
