Do you have /any/ idea how much bandwidth is required to deliver video? No, I suspected not...

There is a reason Netflix uses EC2.

Exercise: Estimate how much Google pays for bandwidth for YouTube.

Wired article, Oct. 2009

The article states that due to homegrown equipment and such like, the company is just sharing the load with the ISPs, so zero cost. However, the cost of the equipment is where the real money is shown.

Its costs for bandwidth are then amortized across the life of its fiber and routers.
If the article is to be believed, we just need to find the cost of Google's servers (Google insiders here?) and then do a division in terms of the amount of bandwidth YouTube uses as a proportion of the total. That calculation is beyond my knowledge because I'm no insider, so if anyone can shed some light on it we would get closer to answering that question.

At this point, I'm wondering if you're simply trolling me. The app would be an addon that lets you interact with 2 or more websites as if they're one website. You're not doing any more than interacting with the website with an addon to your browser.

Um, RSS feeds use web addresses.

Why does everyone think I'm suggesting storing the video? I honestly have no idea where this is coming from.

So how far along are you with writing the app? Do you have an alpha for us to test yet?

I don't think anyone is suggesting that. The point is that you're using Google's bandwidth without paying them.

So, then, are you suggesting something like a "torrent"?

Really, Jason, you should climb out of your crib some day, and enter the real world, like Real men do....

How do you know what real men do?

A little boy asked his father, "What does it mean to be a man??"
"A man is a responsible person, who takes care of the house and his family and protect them no matter what" etc, the father goes on like that for few minutes.

The child looked at his father and proudly said, "One day I want to be a man like mom."

So let me get this straight. Instead of using YouTube, we're going to use some other website which allows you to watch YouTube content and Twitch content and Porno content (while we're at it) all on the same player.

Remind us again Explain for the first time why YouTube is a pile of feces and how streaming the exact same content from the exact same source is going to fix anything.

Did someone in the comments offend you?

Got ticked off that they haven't enhanced all their old 360p videos to 720p using CSI Miami Tech?

ME: "Hi Google! What've you been up to lately?"

GOOGLE: "Oh not much. Streaming videos to people for free, giving people the best browser in the world for free, making millions of internet searches per day for free... You know, the usual."

ME: "Speaking of free, I'm pissed off about your free videos thing so I want to make an app that streams YOUR content on MY page using YOUR bandwidth because MY stream just piggy backs off YOUR site. I'll make sure to put your logo on the bottom of the page somewhere, next to the other saps I'm screwing."

The rest of the conversation is left as an exercise to the reader. Suffice to say, there's going to be some talk about how I am going to even finance my app.

I'm either going to make people pay to stream content they can get for free on one of the most ubiquitous websites in the world, or put my own advertisements, allowing very smart and reputable companies advertise on my brand new pirate venture.
