Be careful. One of the advertised features of GIMPS over the years has been the fact that a user can "set it and forget it".

OK, so this might not even be as much of an issue as I thought.

As of 2013-12-31 0500 GMT, looking at the "Last 1000 Most Recent Cleared Not Prime" report, I see 7, count 'em, 7 results attributed to v4_computers.

In three cases, there are user names associated with the v4 submissions. A couple of these users are bigger players, IIRC:

Jacques X. Charles
Lawrence V. Castiglione III
ahmerali

These users could probably be contacted and encouraged to switch to v5.

ANONYMOUS is responsible for four of the seven v4 submissions, or 0.4% of the last 1000. These submissions are all DCs, done in 34-87 days, longer than we might like, yes, but by no means egregiously long.

Let's try to keep an eye on this metric over the next few weeks. It might be that v4 submissions actually are below 1% of all GIMPS throughput.

But it does appear that v4_computers, even "ANONYMOUS" still get preferred DC assignments. Here is a sample from Christmas day (not all of these are still actual DC candidates, of course, but I think there's still an issue here worth discussing).

Correct. October 2008 was the Big Bang! The alpha testing with TF-LMH exponents started late -2007 or early 2008. So petrw1 was right in his first answer.

I'm in the party of the people saying that "every bit helps". Personally I have few Pentium D computers running at 2G8 to 3G4 which are very good doing DC. Well, they are not very power-efficient, and (by cost-related reasons) only one is running currently now, and that is feeding a GPU for mfakto, but that may not be the case for other users. As someone pointed already, a lot of small business computers still run win xp, therefore disqualifying them would be very bad for gimps. Continue to give them P-1 and DC assignments, or even ECM, would be perfect.

TL;DR: if my vote counts, let them play, at lest on DC market, they can help enough!

I still dream that someone finds a missed prime, that would really be a hit!

Note that we're talking about disqualifying old software that hasn't been updated, not old hardware.

I think that v4 should continue to be supported, to keep the idea that you can "set it and forget it" if you like.

It'd be good if we could get people to be better about updating their software, but there's no surefire way to do that, especially for unattended machines, so there might always be that small portion of people using terribly out of date software.

I wonder if my cpu is more than 5 years old. Since it's an AMD, I didn't have to replace it last time I replaced my motherboard, and that was a long time ago. It's a phenom II x4, black box edition, but not overclocked (I don't think). But the point is not whether or not my cpu is 5 years old, it's that it really doesn't matter. Sure, I'd love to see a message pop up in the response to all v4 clients to upgrade their software to v5, but really, this is a non problem. There probably is not a solution that's better than the one George already implemented.

Certainly we would like to encourage all to upgrade....even Bill and Steve would agree

Anyone on V4 (or any version for that matter) that is not completing assignments won't get more. But if they are it still helps. Heck I still am running 2 PIV's close to 10 years old. Elec is cheap where I live. They each contribute close to 2 GhzDays per day. Granted a GPU might do that in minutes .... but if there are 100 like mine it adds up. Wasn't it Cheesehead who used to talk about 100.01 mph is faster than 100?
