Thanks for the tip, unfortunately I'm on linux so can't try 28.1 yet. I need to get a better cooler and improve case airflow first anyway. It didn't do it on the timed test, but when I started a torture test my cpu was thermal throttled after a few minutes.

With the most recent versions of prime95 on haswell the efficiency of the program has caused a few problems. At the very least good coolers seem necessary. Some people really struggle to get their system stable even without overcloking. A lot of these systems will happily run error free on an older version of prime95 for years.

Yes. As you can see the 4th core doesn't add much because the system is memory bandwidth starved. Ideally you would expect to see around 34 ms, not 40 ms. If you keep using 27.9 without the Haswell FMA3 instructions, 1866 MHz is probably the sweet spot. If you upgrade to 28.1, 2133 MHz is what I would suggest. However, as anything over 1600 MHz is a memory over clock, there is no guarantee the CPU will be stable at memory speeds higher than 1600 MHz. If you're shopping for RAM, CAS timings don't matter to mprime.

If you do upgrade to 28.1+, the FMA3 instructions cause Haswell to run hotter (up 0.1 volts), so make sure you have an after market cooler. The Hyper 212 Evo works great and is fairly inexpensive. There is also a version 28.2, but I haven't seen George release a 64-bit Linux binary yet.

@George: Why can't the just-over-100Mdigit-sized numbers use FFT length 18432 K rather than 19200?

The 19200K FFT is faster than the 18432K FFT. This suggests some more optimizations may be possible.

You get very little bonus from going over 4 cores. Faster memory would help that.

Very impressive, especially looking at a 15W TDP CPU. Not sure, but you may be memory bottlenecked if running in single channel.
