Hehe, I live in a rented house. If I will ever build my one (the one I have in my country is built/bought by my parents) it will be totally different. Think fresnel lens and hot water (or steam) pipes, used to produce cold (ice)...

Ok. But electricity is roughly $0.3830/kWh for me here in Denmark including distribution and all charges and taxes.

The electricity itself is only ~$0.0810 depending on alternating prices and distribution is $0.0765. The rest ($0.2255) is charges and taxes.

You might be surprised how little value networks sometimes put on saving taped episodes of even the most popular shows 50 years ago (before it was obvious how much value they might have in the next century)!

Many, many network recordings got taped-over with later stuff, to save expense of storing (which loomed large to them in those days) what was not yet seen as having much future value.

As the Dirksen center says,

apparently the “official” Web site for the “Tonight Show” has video beginning only in 1969—Dirksen died in September of that year.

I guess disappointed would be a better description than surprised. I think of the hundreds of hours of "I Love Lucy" which are still around. While I do not regret their preservation, it is a shame that other iconic material has not survived.

Of course, many early film works are lost, too. I remember the excitement occasioned by the discovery of an overseas trove, from the former Soviet Union if I remember correctly.

Canada's CBC taped over the coverage from the 1972 Summit Series. This is a very famous hockey tournament between the Soviet Union and Canada. Essentially, it's another one of those bullshit Communism vs "Capitalism" things and of course half of the free world was cheering for Canada, presumably hoping that Russia would lose and rethink their stance on taking away people's freedoms? We did win but, to the surprise of maybe on speck of dust halfway across the galaxy, the Ruskies didn't change.

Anyway, big hyped up hockey tournament, and CBC taped over it.

I think they did that because the videotape used was too expensive to use as archival storage. We used to fight over a few (words, bytes) of code, too. I remember once advising a futurists' group about IT in the future (this was ca. 1980) to consider how they would operate if comunications, processing power, and storage were free and practically unlimited. They thought that was pretty funny, but still paid me for it.

Thanks. New to me. Guess it's too late to edit.

As long as >= 1 of their viewers taped and saved it... or maybe ask the bad SovietsRusskies if they treated their tapes any better. :)
