Nor do I know. That certainly is another angle. It's also an easy one to check if there's an alternate supply available.

I doubt it. The system works fine with my spare video card (8800GT, but it also uses 2x PCI-E power).

One last test I'll try tomorrow is putting the 570 in my other system to confirm the behaviour, if that fails similarly then I'll RMA it.

Got a package from Gigabyte yesterday. Wonder of wonders, it contained replacements for all three fans on the GTX 570, plus the three-way-split wiring harness which connects them to the card.

High marks in the end for Gigabyte Service. (It did take a bit of prodding to wake up the process, but all's well that ends well.)

Just to follow up, these fans and ones like them can be found on Ebay and other places on a search for "75mm frameless fan", aka "frameless server fan". On this Gigabyte card, the mounting screws form an equilateral triangle with 40mm legs. The blades are 10mm thick. There are also 16mm thick versions out there. The number of wires in the connector vary from 2 to 4, but these for Gigabyte are 3 wire. These are very similar to the fans on MSI Twin Frozr cards, though one has to be very watchful about the mounting screw center distance. Ones like Gigabyte sent me run $12-13 on Ebay. I have noticed that the originals say 0.25Amp on the label, while the replacements are 0.20Amp.

At the moment, the card is running at normal temp with the originals, with my hacked relube job on one. The new ones go in the drawer until conditions deteriorate again.

Mailed my card to EVGA, they got it, shipped the replacement yesterday, and then this morning they tell me "congrats, we've given you a free upgrade from GTX 570 to GTX 660 Ti"

Needless to say I'm not thrilled, especially since I explicitly told them I wanted a 570 in return, or a 580 if no 570s were available, and that anything from the higher series short of a 690 or Titan was not an acceptable replacement.

Looks like you'll be losing roughly ~150 GHz...

Even from a non-mfaktc perspective, the GTX 660 Ti is only better in some ways, not in all ways, than the GTX 570, so it's hard to call it an "upgrade". You should complain. You can use http://www.mersenne.ca/mfaktc.php as a reference to show why you regard so few things as acceptable replacements.

I never realized how well the GTX 570 performed in mfaktc. I thought you were pissed off for CudaLucas reasons. Definitely send them a copy of the chart. Explain to them how a even a GTX 780 isn't a completely suitable replacement. That should open their eyes a bit.

You'll have to see what their replacement policy says. They might have that one benchmark (or worse yet some efficiency test) that says that the 660Ti is better than the 570 and that this constitutes an "upgrade" in accordance with their replacement policy, in which case you're more or less boned.

Note my GTX 660 Ti is overclocked a good way and provides about 290 GHz of Trial factoring. It's still nowhere near the GTX 570 benchmark that is probably a bit low itself.

That is the same trade Gigabyte offered me, but they told me in advance. When I objected, they countered with a better 570 than the one I had sent in.

I would make lots of noise and insist that they pay return shipping on the 660ti, as well. If you are on Facebook and/or Twitter, complaints there get many companies' attention very quickly.

That is my intention. I've made a reasonable amount of initial complaint, waiting to hear back from them.
