Well, well -- Black's N/a5 moved back to c6 without needing to be poked by Bd2, which was a past recommendation of mine. I'm glad you all were wiser than me on that one!
O-O, Rb1, Rc1, Ra2, c3 ... any other candidates? Does Black 13 ... Nd4 have any merit? Does 13 c3 have merit as a preventative now? (Hey! Isn't that why we moved Nd1 six weeks ago?) Last fiddled with by cheesehead on 2013-10-22 at 06:22 |

Those look like the current possible moves. The threat of Nd4 is real and the only good moves I've looked at are c3 a preventive move and O-O which brings the rook into play with Rf2 if the knight moves to d4 after castling. Haven't figured out which of the rook moves is best an how it would compare to the other moves.

I am also undecided, between c3 and 0-0. I think 0-0 is safer, but I am afraid of the black horse. Palliser says it is a very strong move, and in the former game we got a lot of profit from it. But now the situation on the board is very different. If I would be black now, I would better bring more power from the back (developing the second horse for example in e7) instead of Nd4, which is not yet clear for me how sustainable is right now. However, that horse is scaring me a bit, enough to put c3 higher against any move with the rook.
So, c3 or 0-0. I am yet to think deeper to decide between these two moves. |

I have since looked at the rook moves and can't rate any of them higher than c3 or O-O. O-O is the least complicated and does allow c3 at a latter point if the knight does move to d4 along the lines of O-O Nd4 Rb2 some black move then c3.

Let's not forget that c3 would create a "hole" at b3, and that N/c6-a5-b3 could be troublesome regardless of tempi!

I think Na5 will be a mistake, after c3. We can respond with b4 and then Nb3, Rb1, c4 is forced, as he can't take the horse out anymore. It is true that we can not take it yet, as we only have one attack to c4 pawn, and he has two defenses, but we opened the bishop line, and we stay much better in center.
Still thinking if after that, we push e5 or move something else. So my vote is c3 - 5 points 0-0 - 4 points. All other moves seem to be not as good. |

Any more votes/ideas/comments?
Hope we don't run out of time. From my side, after spending more time with it this Sunday, c3 is still looking good. |

I've haven't found any clear positions with c3 occurring before the rook moves from a1 while O-O brings the rook into play while the king defends the bishop, with that said I would rank the moves and moving the rook on a1 now gives black to much of a clear idea as to what to do next.
O-O - 5 c3 - 4 Rb1 - 2 Rc1 - 1 Ra2 - 1 |

Good. I was somehow undecided myself, and c3 looked more offensive. Castling is very good too. We castle.
