(d) due to this quote from MathWorld: "Objects that transform like zeroth-rank tensors are called scalars, those that transform like first-rank tensors are called vectors, and those that transform like second-rank tensors are called matrices." We know questions of this kind are ambiguously answerable,
and I was hoping each choice a-e (and Xilman's f) would
get at least one humourous explanation. I'm partial to
the exclude-monoid definitional answer, since a monoid is
something else (a class in Algebra, like groups and rings).

A scalar keeps track of how many fish I eat and also makes sure that their skins are nice. These fish travel along a vector (one of many) that involve probabilities and amplitudes. When I have problems, my GI doctor enters the matrix looking for monoids and I get tensor. Having a monoid probably means I shouldn't kiss him but what is appropriate? So I guess monoids are the odd man out of that procedure.
