I don't know what users do for numbers over 10 but I suspect that the other hand is additive instead of multiplicative. ie. 4 + 10 would be 14 instead of forty.
Added: I think I am wrong about that on second thought because ASL is such a functional language and I don't think greater numbers would be so clunky.

A follow-up on the emoticons:

This project has now reached its minimum funding goal.

Base Goal Reached!

Update #5 · Mar. 26, 2013 · 3 comments
The folks at GroupMe ( https://groupme.com/ ) have pushed us into the "funded" zone so we'll be adding a new emoji every day. Keep an eye on the repository. We've also added conversion presets for Android L/M/H/XH assets and included pre-rendered versions in the repository.

And for our first "funded" day we've added the "pizza" emoji. Personally I think it could use some green peppers for color - what do you think?

Phantom Open Emoji did get promulgated like I thought it might:

Emoji - soon to be more accessable!

Update #19 · Jun 7, 2013 · 1 comment
We're slowly getting more reports of people using POE. Some projects ff particular interest:

Google project to standardize mulit-color font glyphs, with POE as sources for the emoji set: http://google-opensource.blogspot.ca...t-fun-for.html

POE plugin for Wordpress: http://wordpress.org/plugins/open-source-emoji/

And of course our own Rails plugin [work in progress!]: https://github.com/Genshin/PhantomOpenEmojiRails

Othrewise emoji are gradually being added to the set. Be sure to check in regularly. Also if you see your emoji in the set and have any complaints be sure to leave them in the comments.
and this from code.google: color-emoji

Color Emoji support in OpenType
This project consists of the following bits and pieces:
  • A proposed specification to add support for embedded color image glyphs in OpenType fonts. See the links section on the left for the live version of the specification,
  • A tool called emoji_builder.py, to embed a set of PNG images into an existing fonts,
  • Two sets of sample PNG images for ASCII characters and sample scripts to build them into test fonts: FruityGirl and Funkster.
  • Scripts to build a real color emoji font out of the Open Source PhantomOpenEmoji images.
The above bits are in the default git repository of the project.

There are also the following git trees available:
  • freetype2: A fully functional patch to the FreeType text rasterizer to support this specification,
  • freetype2-demos: Adjust demo tools to render color fonts. Requires the above freetype2 tree,
  • skia: Support new color bitmaps in the FreeType font host,
  • cairo: A proof-of-concept version of the Cairo graphics library to use the above FreeType library and use fallback software rendering for the Xlib backend, with support for color glyphs.
The patches are in the 'color-emoji' branch of the trees. Note that the freetype2 and freetype2-demos patches were upstreamed on May 29, 2013.

The built versions of the fonts can be downloaded from the "Sample fonts" link on the left. All three are licensed under OFL and can be used for testing in other projects.
So the open emoji concept is alive and this Kickstarter project seems to have worked out ok. I'm glad it worked out for the people involved.
