Off the top of my head, because you don't use one.
Most users are probably like you, running an outdated system. Your processor is listed at 35W Max TDP where mine is listed at 95W TDP. ~3x the power usage for ~16 times the output. You could buy one on Ebay for $380 since you don't need a gaming setup like mine. ...(drones on like this interminably)
You entirely miss my point about "Why are there so many LL assignments in Limbo?". I do an LL test every 50 days on my laughably old machine, by doing nothing more clever than running Prime95. 15,000 users like me would do the 300 tests per day we are currently completing. There are in fact ~100,000 LL assignments. D Last fiddled with by davieddy on 2013-04-27 at 19:39 Reason: Why is the quote not working? |

My machine isn't all that old, I thought, but my current LL (58xxxxxx), on one core, will take more than 90 days.

There are 15,000+ "dabblers" below me. Some of those above e.g. Curtisc run at least two tests simultaneously. When talking numbers, it is clearer to refer to cores or assignments rather than people or users. D BTW when I exclaimed "Phew!" a few posts ago, it referred to your GPU being 100x faster at TF than your i5. Last fiddled with by davieddy on 2013-04-27 at 21:20 |

It was always estimated that GPUs were at least 100x a CPU, but it wasn't until mfaktc .20 that this was truly realized. I was running 7 GPUs when temps started rising outside and I shut down 3 systems to save on cooling costs. Shortly after this, I switched to .20 and the loss of throughput I had from removing those 3 was offset by the speedup from the GPU sieve. I could add another 380 GHzD/day if I could afford the power bill. |

My machine has run mprime for all the 6 years of its life, doing mostly LL double checks plus a few first time tests, and I'm far, far below you in the LL rankings, David? So am I a dabbler, am I watching dodgy videos, or do I get a special insult just for me?

1) What is wrong with dabbling? 2) Whether one is dabbling or not in a pursuit of some kind is both relative and subjective. 3) I think I implicitly included myself in the "dabbler" class, especially when addressing BCP"BigIron"19. I find streaming video has a big impact on the iteration time, and raised the topic as a possible reason Richard's LL tests were taking 90 days. D |
