How long does it take a good GPU or AVX core to
1) TF a 63M exponent to 74 bits? 2) P-1 it? 3) LL test it? D |

1) ^73-^74 = 1hr 56min 2) dunno 3) ~5 days I5-2500K (OC to 4.3 GHz) 1) ^73-^74 = ~8 days 13 hours 2) ~10.5 hours 3) ~10.1 days (5.1 days using 2 cores) Core2Quad Q6600 1) ~21 days 14 hours 2) ~36 hours 3) ~30 days Last fiddled with by bcp19 on 2013-04-25 at 23:08 |

GTX 570 1280Mb memory
1) ^73-^74 = 1hr 45min 2) ~3hr with b1 = 580000, b2 = 11890000, e = 2 ~5hr with b1 = 605000, b2 = 16637500, e = 6 3) 4d 7hr 30min With more memory, p-1 will be considerably faster. |

GTX580 1530Mb memory, factory OC to 782MHz (and when it is cool outside, not in this period of the year, I go higher, like 820, 850, etc):
1) ~= one hour and half 2) I don't know yet 3) ~= 80 hours or so I7-2600K (@ around 3.8 to 4.0 GHz in this hot period of the year - the hottest for the place in the world where I live) 1) ~= 8 days to 9 days 2) ~= 10 to 11 hours 3) ~= 10-12 days for a single core test (divide by the number of core used, so 4 cores may take about 3 days) |

You have to blame the discovery of the new prime for this :D
Many guys read in the newspapers/web, and they took assignments to make some easy money, or fame, unknowing what they go against, then they gave up. It may take some time until PrimeNet gets rid of them, due to its "not so rigorous" expiration policy. |

Yep.
LL testing is so demanding. My core2 takes ~50 days for a "record" LL. 6 years ago I downloaded Prime95 and pressed "go". I don't turn my machine off, and every 50 days I find another composite. I am rewarded with being ranked 1500 on the list of top LL producers. The only downside is having to talk incessantly to a load of jokers on Mersenneforum. It's a hard life

n00b, I did my test in the 1990's.

And I am in the top 500 for DC's even though I haven't done any in several years. And the top 98+% for TF and P-1. Of the 124200 assignments that I have applied 21000 GHz-days to, none have been prime either. What was the point of your post? |

Snide comments aside, because the 2500k is technically a high end gaming CPU and not many people would dedicate theirs 24/7 to GIMPS. I spent over $1200 building my 2500K cause I do game, but when I'm at work, it's dedicated to GIMPS. Most users are probably like you, running an outdated system. Your processor is listed at 35W Max TDP where mine is listed at 95W TDP. ~3x the power usage for ~16 times the output. You could buy one on Ebay for $380 since you don't need a gaming setup like mine. Let me break it down for you: 1) While a single core of an OVERCLOCKED i5-2500k can put out ~10 GHzD/day, George's AVX coding is too efficient for current hardware limitations and due to bandwidth issues the entire machine can only perform ~29 GHzD/day with all 4 cores running. So I only run 3 cores on P95 (~27GHzD/day) since the power waste of running the 4th core is not worthwhile to me . (Even though that 4th core would add more firepower than your whole system produces) 2) 27*365 = 9855. There are only 128 people on the list of top LL producers that exceed this criteria, 241 people on the overall. 3) Of these 128 LL producers, many are likely using more than 1 computer and not a 2500, so there are even fewer likely candidates using this powerhouse. |
