Default Looks like it's down for the count

I woke up this morning to the insistent beeping from MISFIT telling me the one of my machines was not responding. So I look and see the 2400 is not talking, so I go look at it and it's completely powered down. I push the power button, nothing. Since it's 4am, I unplug it then remove it from MISFIT's checking and go back to bed.

So, when I remember it, I plug it back in and still nothing. So, taking a known good PSU I do a swap and still nothing. There is no flicker of lights, the fan doesn't move, no beeps. Having ruled out the PSU, any ideas what to check next?

Pull it apart so that you have just the PSU and RAM connected to the mainboard, and try a boot. We can take it from there...

Leave the CPU and its heatsink alone, but make sure its fan is connected to the board.

Also, keep the leads to the panel power switch etc. connected!

Keep in mind the CPU fan might be at fault -- don't fry your CPU. However, if your board has LED lights that are not coming on after you have stripped down the system and connected the mains through the PSU before you hit the front panel power button...

Can you swap components (RAM, CPU) to test on another motherboard? The fan not twitching makes me suspicious of the board. No beeps (after swapping PSU) is not encouraging, either. That could be the CPU. I've recently been through this scene (in a broad sense.)

All stripped down, as Paul suggests, is a good start, too.

Could be a short in the power button on the case, or the jumpers could have come loose from the board. I'd strip it to just memory and cpu though, as already stated.

Color me embarrased... While taking out the GPU I happened to look at the back of the power supply and see an ON/OFF switch... which of course is in the off position. I hook the GPU back up, turn on the PSU switch, hit the main power switch and bingo, computer is working. Turns out it was the PSU and thankfully not the MB.

Well, there was a bad PSU, the gremlins were just in the replacement. ;)

Ah! I had not reviewed the details. I'm glad the box is back on line without further surgery.

Me too, but I hate having lost 3 days work over a stupid switch. :/

The customer engineer at the site where I worked called that "...a high-resistance connection between the outlet and the plug."
