I just joined GIMPS. I have a brand new iMac with 3.4 Ghz Intel Core 7 and 32 GB 1600 RAM. I'm running 4 numbers.
My understanding was that even when my machine is shut down, my designated CPUs will continue to search. What am I at risk with my fan running 24/7? Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

Well, if the machine is actually shut down, it's not doing anything. But if it's running 24/7 that's ok. The fans will run all the time, and the cpu will probably get a little warmer, and while technically this may reduce the lifespan of the chip, the lifespan of the chip is considerably longer than the point you'd probably want to replace it anyway. I wouldn't worry - I've been running it for years.
Though in my case, with the cpu and 2 gpus running full tilt 24/7, it generates a good bit of heat. Not enough to danger the computer, but enough to warm the room it's in. |

George: Feature request for p95 v28 - the program continues to run LL tests when the machine is shut down. I feel that this would be a great boon to GIMPS throughput, and it's not that difficult to implement, now, is it?
