Lightbulb Processor Performance vs. Price

Which P4 processor has the best performance vs. price ratio?
Is it better to build more slower processors or less faster processors?

I found that the best area to invest in is in the 2.6-2.8 range (800 FSB). After that, the price rises exponentially with little gains. That's why I bought a 2.6 in November.

My current favorite (among the intels) is the 2.26ghz northwood P4. At $120 it is cheaper than most and OC's rather well. I think you can still find them at zipzoomfly.com.

My personal favorite is the AMD Athlon XP 2500+ Moble. Cheap and Fast.

Remember that ongoing electricity costs (and any related air conditioning costs!) should be factored into these calculations. Don't just consider the initial purchase cost in isolation.

If you are buying a box from Dell, Gateway, etc., do not get Intel Integrated Graphics. This drains the CPU. Get a separate video card.

Default dells

From what i've been seeing (friends ordering new computers for college and such), dells at least only come with intel integrated graphics. But i also hear their customer service makes up for it.

The really cheap Dells have the integrated graphics. You have to upgrade to a different model where a separate video card is an option. This will cost almost $200 more than without the video card.

unless of course if this will be a college-dorm computer or in a place where the landlord pays for electric

Intel Pentium 4 2.8 GHz ( 800 MHz system bus ), L2 512 kB.

Slower than 2.6 are hard to get nowadays and faster than 3.0 are very expensive. Also, don't buy the new Presott CPU with 1MB L2 cache since it is believed to be slower.

Well, in my experience prime95 23.8 runs 10-15% slower on Prescotts than on Northwoods with the same clock.
