For quite some time PrimeNet has been serving up pages that are not consistent. Some of them work ok and some are malfed. For example http://www.mersenne.org/primenet/ gives me a page (in Opera, which follows the HTML standards uber faithfully) with all of the menu choices strung out across the top and the data way of to the right after that (it is in the right 1/6 of the page, so a lot of scrolling.) But some others like http://www.mersenne.org/report_recent_results/ don't have that problem, they are aligned ok.
I poked around the code and found the differences that see to make it work or not. This is the working section from a page that works Code:
<body>
<div align="left">
<table border="0" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0" style="border-collapse: collapse" bordercolor="#111111" width="1000" height="533">
<tr>
<td colspan="2" width="714" height="19"><div align="left">
<table border="0" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0">
<tr>
<td valign="top">
<a href="/webarchive/">
<img border="0" src="/images/sm_logo_2007.jpg" width="184" height="92"></a></td>
<td>
<b><font size="5" face="Tahoma">Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search<br>
PrimeNet </font></b><font face="Verdana" size="4">(v5.0)</font></td>
</tr>
</table>
</div></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td width="50" height="483" valign="top"><script src="/TreeMenu.js" language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script language="JavaScript" type="text/JavaScript">
Code:
<body>
<div align="left">
<table border="0" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0" style="border-collapse: collapse" bordercolor="#111111" >
<tr>
<td colspan="2"><div align="left">
<table border="0" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0">

<td>

</tr>
</table>
</div></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td width="8%" valign="top"><script src="/TreeMenu.js" language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript"></script>

No formatting errors on IE9.
Based on a cursory look at the HTML and description of the problem, it might just be a missing </td>... |

Yeah. It shouldn't, but it does.
WRT Uncwilly report above, validator.w3.org can be a good friend to any web developer. It's results for the Primenet Activity Summary is an example. (Not to pick on George or Scott -- it can be a royal pain to get an HTML page to be fully conformant while still working correctly in all browsers (*cough* Internet Exploder *caugh*). I haven't checked myself recently to see if all of GPU72 is.) |

I am an FF user (the institute IT installed IE on all company computers though, and just recently proudly "rolled out" IE9 (!) oh yes!), but for the compatibilty sake, I also have to check some pages every once in a while.
I've just noticed the latest M$soft bid to bump up the html5 compliance ...IE10. Tested it now. Hmm, canvas is alive for the first time! Oh joy, rapture! |
