I don't think it was the base problem that confused him. You are throwing around loosely stated alternative scenarios. It matters greatly if you have picked a door first or not. I your ten door scenarios, if you have picked a door, then the host opens 8 of 9, if you have not picked a door, the host opens 8 of 10. That little distinction makes the probability 50-50 or 10-90. But you have to read carefully to realize there are two distinct scenarios being talked about.

Agreed . But why do you suppose this particular issue develops
so much interest? Probably the fact that so many smart people
get it wrong at first. Including math phds and other experts.

The answer is kinda paradoxical and counter-intuitive for most.

WIthout prolonging the discussion, is there any other similarly
seemingly easy/straightforward problem (in math) that might
have a similar impact?
