I'm curious, whenever a new mersenne prime is found, is there a spike of activity from new users?

Most of us are expecting something of that sort. I believe it's historically been true.

Now that it has been officially verified, congratulations, congratulations, congratulations! Especially to George, who now has discovered 14 Mersenne primes through GIMPS. With this discovery, he has surpassed Pietro Cataldi in increasing the number of known Mersenne primes expressed as a ratio: Cataldi showed that M17 and M19 are prime, increasing the number of known Mersenne primes from 5 to 7, a 40% increase. George still trails Rafael Robinson, who in 10 magic months in 1952 increased the number of known Mersenne primes from 12 to 17, but one more discovery by GIMPS will give George the lead. Go GIMPS!

Oh dear. Boring. Yet another prime. Ho hum. Not like it wasn't expected or anything.

But seriously - Exciting news. So I only need just a few more primes now to complete my evil plans. So everyone keep searching. Don't stop now, we are almost there.
