Hmm, I found several exponents like the one dabaichi posted: http://mersenneforum.org/showpost.ph...9&postcount=95

without any "Unverified" line or "Assigned" line and nothing under http://www.mersenne.org/assignments, so they look like they are available for LL test, but the summary http://www.mersenne.org/primenet/ shows no available LL in the range in question.

So is the summary bugged? or did these exponents "fall through the cracks" somehow?

They did not actually report the number, and specifically because the verification runs had not finished. Lots of news outlets jumped the gun, however, and reported that new Mersenne prime had been found (without telling what the exponent is, iirc). When the verification revealed a composite, they all had to back-pedal, which was bad enough publicity for GIMPS, even tho they hadn't officially announced a new prime. It would have been pretty embarassing if they had; all the more reason not to reveal the exponent until verification is finished.

I ran into this issue with my last dozen candidates: none of them were reservable for LL or TF. In order to get just one out of the dozen, I had to cheat a little I'd be willing to bet that George did this on purpose to stop people like us.

I'm glad to see a new prime after I rejoined the search a few months ago and started checking the forums regularly!

What a pity we found a new mersenne prime... Now Xyzzy and his minions will have a lot of things to do, for example remove all the references of the old record from the front page of the forum:

"Most users ever online: 2^43,112,609-1 on 23 Aug 08",

This and many things will have to be changed...

Yeah, consider yourself lucky. It's 45 months since the last one.

I don't remember that. Which new outlets / exponent was it?

I think I remember being slash-dotted prematurely with links to the forum thread where the ongoing verification was being run. I don't remember if that happened during a false positive.

I do remember the excitement during our first false positive (which caused us to change the program to preserve the last save file) and maybe the avid forum-ites guessed the exponent and a less-than-reputable news outlet went with it. Anyway, I don't think GIMPS' reputation was not tarnished because GIMPS has never officially announced a new prime that was not independently verified.

I guess I have a faulty memory, or maybe learned from someone else's bad memory (the incident mentioned was before I was involved with GIMPS, AFAIK). Thanks for the more accurate information on the earlier false positive.

Default Waowww !

Wonderful ! A new candidate Mersenne prime ! Nice work, guys !

I do not have access to any big Bull computer for checking this new candidate. But others should have access to big machines, for sure. How many days does it take today for checking such a big candidate ? maybe I have to read all the previous comments in this thread... I'll try to read them.

For now, I'm home, waiting for last medecine exams, since I had a (TRANSIENT !!) cerebral vascular accident 3 weeks ago. For now, they found no explanation... since my 54 years body is in perfect shape, the body of a sportman they said.

While waiting for news about checking this candidate, you could have a look at my last hobby : photography.
Look at: http://www.skeptic.com/ .
You may appreciate different kinds of photographs, like Paris or ... nice ladies.

Tony
