So the story in Canada was picked up nationally it seems all generated from the Ottawa Citizen story which made the front page.

It was also picked up by the National Post (page 3), Winnipeg Free Press, Montreal Gazette, Calgary Herald, Saskatoon Star-Phoenix, Victoria Times-Colinist, Windsor Star...

So it looks like a lot of people in Canada will get a little schooling on prime numbers today.

The journalist mentions GIMPS and also gives the URL to the prime7.zip file so you might see more traffic there today.

The picture never made it in the story but I will see if I can get a scan of the story (not sure of the legal issues of posting it though).

Forgot to post this yesterday - very busy at work. My DC run, started on May 16th, finally finished. I did the first few M iterations in single-CPU mode on a 1.5GHz Itanium 2 workstation, then once I finally got a successful multithreaded build of Mlucas on that platform, split the remainder of the run between 3 CPUs of a 1.4GHz I2 and both CPUs of a 1.5GHz I2. I was expecting to finish this past Monday, but lost a couple of days to to contention for cycles on those shared machines. I'd say the average throughput I got corresponds roughly to doing the entire job on a 2-CPU 1.2GHz I2. Here are the last few dozen lines of the job-status text file:

Apperently, the Vancouver Sun, Province, and the Globe and Mail haven't picked up on it

So the Vancouver/rest of BC area hasn't picked up on it yet. Let's hope tomorrow they do it as they have an expanded paper on Fridays and Saturdays

Nothing in the Seattle papers (or at least their websites). Not surprising. Embarrassing, but not surprising. The Post Intelligencer did have a little blurb on M13466917 from December 2001.

So if you get enough GIMPSers in a (virtual chat) room, it's quite likely that GIMPS will discover the Nth Mersenne prime on the Nth birthday for one (or more) of them? I guess that does make sense ... but I think it takes more than the roughly 2 dozen that the classical common-birthday thing requires.

Even more improbable is discovering the Nth Mersenne on the Nth birthday of one of the handful of people involved in the official double-checking. It's a government/space-alien conspiracy, I tellya!
