Does anyone no if the versions of mprime/prime95 on different OS's give a different performance? E.G. Which OS should I use for the best results?

mprime/prime95 both are assembly code so the performance difference is negligible on x86's.

Although...
If it was a dedicated box, and you didn't want to run Linux or FreeBSD, NT4 Workstation would be the best IMO... It has a lot less overhead than 2K and XP and, properly patched, it is very stable... Personally, I'd never use 98 or ME because they lack decent monitoring tools and they are not designed with reliability in mind... |

I don't have any problems with running FreeBSD/Linux, I was just wondering if there where noticable differences in client speed, but as Garo pointed out this is not very likely because of the program's working part is written in assembly. So I think it will be a minimal FreeBSD/Linux install as it's easier to manage without a monitor ;)

For a dedicated box, LINUX or FreeBSD would be a lot lower cost, at least equal performance, and MUCH more reliable solution than any NT box - much less 9x or 2k or XP.
Also, it's fairly easy to fit a LINUX installation *WITH* Prime onto a 100 Meg HD - it's difficult to *just* fit the OS into that with NT or later. Having run both mprime and Prime95 on a couple boxes, I'd say the speed of the two is a tossup - seems to be almost NO varience between the two with identical hardware. |

I fit a stripped version of FreeBSD and mprime onto a 32MB CF card... To make it bootable I used a CF to ATA adapter...
The only problem was there was not enough room for the save files mprime generates... :) I suppose a 64MB CF would work... If I ever get time I am going to try to use PicoBSD to slim it down some more... |

Try a micro LINUX distribution like muLINUX - which can fit the entire LINUX onto a single floppy drive.
Those multi-meg Prime intermediate files DO soak a lot of space, though.... |
