Default Untie flies

We are using Unity as a shell interface for the GNOME desktop environment in Ubuntu. We are doing so because we support a lot of family and friends that we have convinced to run Linux. Personally, the interface drives us batty, but everyone else loves it, so we need to be fluent in its use.

Our most immediate issue is we have no taskbar tool to copy and paste in customized text. With the regular Gnome desktop we had an applet that had various special symbols that we could click on and use. The symbols were customizable.

Is there a way to duplicate this functionality with Unity? Right now we are using a docked text document.

There are relatively easy ways of switching between the different desktop enviroments if you are interested. You could use one. They could use the other.

We have several desktop environments installed.

We are forcing ourselves to use Unity to see if we can make it usable.

So far it has been very frustrating.

There are ways for us to regain control of the taskbar but they are slightly complex and unsupported. Since we deploy Unity on Ubuntu to many friends and family members we are hoping to find a way to do it simply.

We don't get very many calls for support anymore. Perhaps our "customers" think we are punishing them with Unity and are afraid to ask for additional help?

They know how to use it simpler, but don't want to tell you...
