Heh, I've been waiting for the fix-it tools before continuing with French, but then again, being in Belgium, he probably knows more than I

There will be, shortly.

In the interm, if you set your browser to have English before (above in the list) Dutch, that is what the site will serve you.

Under Firefox it's Edit -> Preferences... Content Tab... Languages, "Choose your preferred language for displaying pages".

I've just found out how to do it in IE (I've use FF and GC before, too).

It is under Tools :: Internet Options :: Languages
(in the last row, between Colors and Fonts)

In Chrome you can just type "chrome://settings/languages" into the URL box and it'll take you to the page. Alternately, do
Settings/Preferences (OS dependent)
Under the Hood
Web Content --> Languages and Spell-checker Settings

Yes, I tend to prefer texts written in the original language, too, if I know that language. But of course, no-one is going to prefer the translated texts at the moment before they're anything like ready. Right now they look terrible in other languages (well, the Dutch does anyway) because the work of translating has hardly begun.
Whether this project ever succeeds in producing anything reasonably good in the other languages is, of course, another question. The difficulties, which chalsall in particular talks about, are enormous.

You're probably right, but I've been writing "deler". This illustrates another difficulty, that of inconsistency due to different styles amongst different translators. The translation of the word "factor" ought to be the same across the site since it occurs so often and is such an important keyword.

Another example: I translated the phrase "20M - 30M Range Weekly Progress" into Dutch yesterday evening. I now notice that this same phrase also occurs for 30M-40M, 40M-50M and 50M-60M underneath, and these have not yet been translated. (The site did not offer them to me.) Imagine how terrible this will look if another translator uses a different form of words to translate these ranges!

@Brian-E: and then there's a fight between 'The Netherlands-dutch' and 'Belgium-dutch' :)

Of course, Belgium dutch is much better

Yes, inconsistancy is a problem; as you say, particularily when many people are contributing translations. I have plans to allow people to suggest alternatives, and a "voting" system when multiple translations have been submitted.

With regards to the "20M - 30M Range Weekly Progress" phrase, that was entered into the system for translation with intention of migrating it to "%dM - %dM Range Weekly Progress", with the %d's being replaced with the numbers as appropriate. I didn't have that functionality enabled at the time. Now that I do, I now need to finish the editing functions before I can migrate the submitted translations myself because two of the three are in Unicode; the MySQL console doesn't handle that well so I can't edit it by hand.

Lastly, with regards to different language uses based on country... Yes, I am aware of that problem as well, and it has been designed for. I wanted to do one step at a time.

Thanks for all the submitted translations everyone, and I hope I haven't caused people more trouble than this experiment was worth. It has been very enlightening as a web developer!

Note to chalsall: You probably don't want a link to /admin listed in some of the phrases

(Also, did I see something about an NGO? Which one? Remove this question if need be :P)

Edit: We collectively have weirdly-awesome timing. It literally took me 15 seconds to write the initial post, in which you managed to make such a large post. Also, "Français" is still displayed as "Français" :P

Edit2: The list of pages where a phrase appears seems to be grossly overestimated. I can't find "By P-1 Factoring" anywhere.

Edit3: What the crap is /admin/spaw/spacer.gif ?

Another is French-France and French-Canadian!

My sister is the linguist in our family. She spent several years in France learning French. Then she came back to Canada and moved to Quebec. Everyone laughed at her French....
