It does sound plausible. I suspected that the enforced waiting period might be some type of DDoS defense. In fact I was going to speculate on that in the post, but then I thought, "Who would ever have an interest in attacking mersenneforum.org -- some other DC project?" and I deleted that part.

But stranger things have happened, so maybe we can't rule out the possibility...

This is always going to be some spam, but I'm not sure how much of the spam bothers with the search engine. (Maybe they don't anymore because of the limit?)

Thanks, Dubslow, that was interesting reading.

You're right that a waiting period for searches wouldn't seem to have anything to do with spam.

Maybe mersenneforum.org was subjected to alien assault via SETI@Home. A resolution to the mystery will have to wait for Xyzzy or one of his minions.
