Problem: results not recorded

I run Prime95 on two computers. Everything is fine on one of them. One the other, using 64 bit version 26.6, when I have completed a LL test the results is not recorded in Results.txt.

As far as I can tell, the results is simply lost. I reinstalled Prime95, but the same thing happened again.

I have completed LL testing on 58220473 and on 57593801.

My name is John Rheinstein. I have moved and have a new email, but cannot seem to register. My old email was jrheinst@rcn.com. My new email is jrheinst@gmail.com.

Any advice would be appreciated

Hmm...

If you previously had a PrimeNet account, you can change the email here. And when you say you can't register, you mean you're doing that here and for some reason it's failing? If so, what sort of error message do you get? It might be that you are registered, but sometimes PrimeNet is slow and pages don't load properly; try logging in with the first username/password combo you tried to register with.

As for Prime95, that's a really weird thing to happen; unfortunately, I have no idea how to help because there isn't much information on what it did do; do you copy the screen output? Did it seem to report it to PrimeNet (i.e. "CommThread")? If not, what did it say? (Are you absolutely sure that it finished the tests?) One possible culprit might be that in setup, if you choose "Just Stress Testing", it won't talk to PrimeNet and would probably ignore any tests you do; could you copy and paste the contents of "prime.txt" here for us? What operating system are you using? What version of prime95 is the one where everything is fine?

One possible explanation for your symptoms is that the results.txt file is not writable by the 64 bit version 26.6 prime95 executable module that isn't recording. This could be caused by incompatible file protection status, or perhaps the results.txt file is in a different directory from the one from which that executable is running. Windows 7 has a complicated permissions scheme; several users of that OS have reported similar file-writing trouble when the permissions haven't been set up just right.

Yep, do not put data files in the program files folder. If you do not play by Windows rules, the easiest way around is simply put the Prime95 in a folder outside of the Windows structure.

Something like C:\Tools\Prime95\ would work.

I just put it inside C:\Users\Bill\Prime95, and that worked fine for me.

The 2 most common issues are:

Windows does not like people or programs messing around in \Program Files\
(so the answers given above are the easy solution, I have a D:\Prime folder, on another machine it is in a shared user space)
During the copying or moving the files, results.txt (and likely other files) got 'write-protected'. Zip files and CD's are common reasons this can happen.
(Solution is to right click on your Prime95 folder and set the 'Read-only' to off for the entire folder.)

John: is there a file "prime.spl" in your Prime95 folder? If you have it and your computer can connect to Internet, then run Prime95 and manually communicate with PrimeNet. If your firewall blocks Prime95, copy the "prime.spl" to another computer which allows Prime95 to connect to Internet, and then manually communicate.

For no record in "results.txt", did you get an error message like:

If so, the problem is most likely you deny Prime95 to write on "results.txt" as well as some others.

Also, it's a good idea to check "Use PrimeNet to get work and report results" under "Configure PrimeNet" dialogue. If you don't want automatic report, check "Do not contact PrimeNet server automatically" under "Manual PrimeNet Communication" dialogue. This is because in this way, Prime95 will also save the result in "prime.spl", so that even though it fails to write on "results.txt", your work won't be lost.
