I only use menus for things like start up disk creators and printers, and in thinking about this post, I just realized/tested that I can just bring those up with Gnome Do as well (if I know the names). I could then theoretically not use menus at all, and in fact I think I will do just that.

I just found this website that compares and reviews GUIs from all sources: http://toastytech.com/guis/index.html.

FWIW, he doesn't have much good to say about Unity or GNOME 3.

For chalsall:

Looks and feels exactly like the System Monitor Applet (except no tooltips allowed). Actually, this is for Unity, not Gnome 3... but I'm sure there's something similar somewhere.

This isn't necessarily "Linux", but GhostBSD is a FreeBSD derivative that uses Gnome 2.

Thanks for that! I'm downloading the LXDE variant now. Gnome has annoyed me too much for too long and I'd like to try some alternatives. XFCE appears to run nicely as my main Linux desktop --- the one on which I'm typing right now.

I've heard about XFCE, but I'm mainly addicted to the System Monitor panel ...applet? that came with Gnome 2. Does such a thing exist in XFCE?
