Default possibly bad news

a person supposedly from an affiliate of Microsoft called me today and told me to look for errors in windows event viewer and a lot popped up so now I'm not sure if my results are accurate for prime 95 they told me from what I was saying my computer ( disk and all) might be 85% corrupted. my sister told me it's just someone trying to sell me crap ( if not it's not great for gimps).

Yep, someone trying to sell you their product. 50/50 it will intentionally cause problems (but not immediately). Just hang up the phone, certainly don't encourage them or give them money.

I love when I get calls like that!

I totally make up stuff when I know I have a clown on the phone.

"My computer is saying it has 2 terabytes of RAM but only 80K of disk space available so it is asking me if I want to upgrade to Linux. Should I click the OK button?"

The only revenge is to WASTE as much time of theirs as you can, and never commit to buying anything, and end every conversation with "My wife wants to know if you have my same computer in Pink."

If you have call display, you can often discern those that are simply trying to scam the unfortunate sucker from genuinely well intent calls.

It seems as though whenever I pretend to sound feeble or infirm, they seem to come on the line rather than drop the call. So the catch becomes the phisher.

The art of playing the player is to behave with uncertainty and repetition, and when prodded, follow with them to the trap, but scale it back until you've dragged the call for about five to 10 minutes -- play it by ear. Then hang up at will; even if it's in the middle of your own sentence. It throws them off.

Every now and then, they will call back. You can waste more of their time or laugh them off on the spot and call them on their scam.

Randomize your reaction to solicitors and scam artists. The last thing anyone should do is put their name on a "Do Not Call" list. If their business is dishonest, their means by which they practice will be the same.

I'd like to see all the contact numbers of the top regulators (FCC, CRTC, etc.) and the upper management of phone companies and put them on the DNC list as well as data mines for marketers. Then, perhaps the interests of those capable of mitigating some of these problems would be in line with those who wish not to be contacted several times daily.

If I get called and I am on the "Do not call list" who do I report the direct violation of the law to? Can I collect my $1000 fee for commercial use of my phone?

But yeah, waste as much of the calller's time as you can....such schemes depend on collecting $$ in little time as possible, and if you keep talking and acting like a spacey idiot, they waste valuable human time on you.

Don't hold yer breath, though.
