I got the CPU back and it is doing the same thing as usual. What is a good system diagnostic that I can run that would point a finger at the bad guy? I just checked on the system and my ntoskrnl is corrupt now and win2k won't boot.

That's a bummer. Can you be more specific about what the error is now? Post the error if you can. Also, the exact hardware config - memory, vidcard sound card - everything. We may be able to help further with more info.

I suggest a complete reformat and reinstall. It sounds like you need it.
Many times it is not hardware that causes error messages, it is software. Never assume an OS install is perfect. I've had to reinstall a least a dozen times right after a new install. Sometimes everything isn't unpacked right. Or maybe the hard drive missed a bit or 2. Best thing, format and reinstall. Remember to use the newest drivers. Just because you have a new piece of hardware and you've installed the drivers from the CD, doesn't mean you have the most recent drivers. |

I tried to install winXP last night. I had previously copied the cd to my drive so it would install faster. I tried to install it about 5 times. each time I would get different errors about coping files. One time it was at 8% and couldn't copy Quartzdll.dll. Next it was Bootvid.dll. Then I went in and erased everything but the CD files and started again and it got passed the previous 2 files but got stuck on Lic.dll and neth.dll and a bunch of others.
My Config is P4 2.26Ghz, Gigabyte GA-8IHXP Rev 3, 512 Kingston PC1066 model KVR1066X16-8/256, Abit Siluro GF4 4200. I have tried a 15gig IDE HD, 80 Gig IDE WD and an 8gig SCSI HD. I am using the onboard sound and network. When I tried the SCSI I also had the Adaptec UW2940 Host. Gigabyte opens in 3 minutes and I am going to call them and ask if they know anything I should be trying. |

First of all, install from the CD. The hard drive needs a lot of room to transfer then unpack then install all those .dll's. It may take lomger, but it will do a better job.
I can't remember where, but I read that you can unpack the .cab files yourself, in case the install doesn't do them correctly. Search on the M$ site for instructions. |

I believe that RAR supports .CAB files, and WinZip might in recent versions, for those that can't figure out where the MS .CAB uncompressor is or how to use it.

I formatted the drive last night and did a fresh install of WinXP. I reinstalled Prime and started to TT it. It ran for 3hr50min. That is about the same as before. I downloaded the newest WHQL Nvidia drivers this morning along with the SBLive drivers. We will test again tonight.

I changed the FSB down to 130 and it has been running for over 15hrs without a hitch. What does that look like? Memory? Motherboard? The only card I have in the system is a GF4 MX420, and the 15Gig WD HD.

Probably the memory couldn't keep up, so errors developed.
Gimps is not kind to errors that most other programs pass on or ignore. |
