Would anyone near Cambridge, UK be interested in either

* Phenom/2500 compute node (4 cores, 8GB memory, no hard drive, onboard graphics) offers around £150. Pretty quiet, PSU not quite big enough to support a heavy GPU.

* Dual quad Opteron/2500 compute node with large memory (8 cores, 32GB DDR2/533 memory, no hard drive, basic Radeon 7000 graphics) offers around £600

Buyer collects in either case. Probably best to respond by PM.

I'm certainly talking to you if you're interested; I was vaguely hoping that the woodwork might be lurker-infested, but it seems maybe not.

What is an "Opteron/2500" or a "Phenom/2500"? The closest in spelling I can find on Wikipedia's lists of AMD processors is the Phenom X4 9500 and a whole bunch of Opterons.

According to /proc/cpuinfo, the 'phenom/2500' system is

Code:

model name	: AMD Phenom(tm) 9850 Quad-Core Processor
stepping	: 3
cpu MHz		: 2500.000
cache size	: 512 KB

and the 'opteron/2500' system has two Opteron 2380 processors, with an L3 cache size of 6MB each.

Exactly what I suggested in the top post; just over half what I paid for the kit in the first place. Which isn't completely unreasonable for second-hand computers.

Sounds good to me. A lurker?

The one time I splashed out big time on hardware was ~1992.
My ex "boss" helped me avoid the VAT, but a 486 DX still
cost the best part of a grand.
I thought the numerical processor would be fun/useful, but
on reading a seriously useful book "Programming the 386/486"
the timings appeared so dismal, I never got round to using it.

The 'puter served me well for several years, but I left it for
the bin man ~5 years ago.

Don't think it would fetch much now, but antique value?
