Default Update on my custom-build problems

Dear god, this is getting out of hand. Five months. Five months now it's been since I built my computer. It's worked for maybe 3 days of those 5 months. I've typed this 2000-word story so many times that I'm sick of it and I'm not doing it anymore. Just read this previous post (but then be sure to not respond there on that old thread. respond here):

http://www.mersenneforum.org/showthread.php?t=15551

So here's what's happened since then. I sent in my motherboard, not for repair like last time, but for a complete replacement with a brand new one. I just installed it. Booted up the first time, and it was EXACTLY like booting up the VERY first time 5 months ago: fans spun, hard drive spun, but nothing showed up on the screen, and there was no post beep. Then I hit the reset button, and it showed "Chassis Intrusion! Fatal Error!" or something like that. EXACTLY like the very first time 5 months ago. Hit reset AGAIN from that error message, and THEN it booted normally to Windows. If you shut it down, walk away for about ten minutes, and then come back to turn it on again, it does the same thing (except it skips the part with the "Chassis Intrusion" error. That only happens the first time).

Just before I sent it in, my old motherboard (same exact model. I sent it in and got it replaced with a newer one of the same model) would do the SAME exact thing, except there would be POST beeps: 2 beeps and then pause and then 5 beeps, which Asus said means the motherboard is touching the case somewhere. It's definitely not. The standoffs are applied. It doesn't visibly touch the case anywhere at all.

Now it's still having the same problem, except now without the beeping (it's silent instead of giving me the POST beep errors). This is EXACTLY what my PC was like when I first built it. If history is truly repeating itself, soon it will start hanging in games, video rendering, and Prime95 (a total PC hang that requires a restart). Then it will soon start beeping where it is normally just silence.

Hopefully you're read my monster of a post that I linked to, and hopefully you then read all of this, and HOPEFULLY (though unlikely) you have a solution for me. I'm losing hope. $700, five months later, and nothing to show for it. Except a very big, expensive paper weight.

Thanks for reading all that.

Have you installed all the wire from the Chassis correct on the motherboard ? do you have any plate on the back side of the motherboard under the cpu. Often comming with extra big cooling devices for the cpu. sometime it can make connection to the pins on the back side if not installed correctly?

Alright, let's assume that "Chassis Intrusion" is correct, and something is grounded that isn't supposed to be, you just can't see it.

Take the Mobo completely OUT of the case, set it on an INSULATING tabletop (a bare stainless steel counter won't do), with the same electrical hookup, and see if you get the same symptoms. If you don't, there are things we can do (involving nylon hardware, washers, standoffs) to get this beast in the case.

While we are here, tell us about how the heatsink is installed on top of the CPU. Don't run the machine until you do, and get a response from here.

I was waching your video. I can not see if you have any 6-pin PCI Express power connector to the GPU-card. the specs for the card are:

1 X 75Watt 6-pin PCI Express power connector is required.
2 X 75 Watt 6-pin PCI Express power connector is required for CrossFireX™ system.

So do you have this 6-pin connected to your videocard ?

AHA! Where's my +1 button to vote this post as really good????

And if there was too much static current being pulled from the PS to the Mobo by the video card (and charging up all the bypass caps), that would explain the case intrusion (short to case) problem, especially if the current went through PCI bus line drivers and the card stayed charged.

Last fiddled with by Christenson on 2011-05-22 at 02:20 Reason: added explanation for why the suggestion is sufficient to explain the observations

How would it? This is not "short to case". This option is for the corporate builders where IT later monitors if anyone opened the case (god forbid) - see page 2-29 of the manual:

OP, did you attach the sensor as described? If you didn't why did you remove the jumper?
