American football. :-)

I was in London just before the first NFL exhibition game there in August 1983. In local pre-game commentary and publicity, it was always called "American football" -- never, ever just "football". There's also the more generic term: gridiron football (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gridiron_football). Last fiddled with by cheesehead on 2010-06-16 at 07:21 |

In Posts 1 and 2 I learned "soccer" comes from Oxbridge "-er" slang for Association Football to distinguish it from Rugby Football. What would the term be for the game played in America by the National Football League? Perhaps "natters"? It seems fair to me that people annoyed by the American usage of "soccer" retaliate by using the term "natters".
Based on Cheeseheads post, perhaps "griders" would be also work. But "natters" is funnier. William |

In Rugger (be it Union or League) it is called a "try", and
the grounding of the ball is critical and subject to many action replays and much scrutiny. Why do you Yanks say "touchdown" when the guy makes no attempt to do so? Davids |

And now a couple of Dutch women arrested and charged for wearing the national colours to the soccer. This is getting silly.

Next thing you know, they'll be arresting scantily-clad Brazilian-fan lovelies for "impersonating scantily-clad Anheuser-Busch/InBev marketing models in order to sow confusion and terror amongst Budweiser drinkers." And the sad thing is, the "Budweiser" in question won't even be the real Budweiser, it'll be the pale yellow name-ripped-off American pretend version of the real thing. In other World Cup news, a funny thing happened to the Spanish armada today... |
