Windows 7 / Ubuntu dual boot system?

Does anyone have experience with a Windows 7 (Professional, 64 bit) / Ubuntu dual boot system?

Which of the systems should be installed first? Linux? Windows?

Ubuntu 9.04 or better 9.10?

I spend most of my time in Windows, but occasionally need Linux to test a compile or if I'm running up against memory in the computer. For this use, I've been very happy with Wubi. Very simple to install in a Windows 7 system, and works great.

I drive things the other way around. VirtualBox gives me a very nice XP installation on a Gentoo Linux machine. I can't see why it shouldn't run W7 under Ubuntu. It even lets me run 32-bit Windows on a VM running on a 64-bit host. If I really needed to, I could run most anything, including Win 3.0 or DOS.

The great advantage of this sort of solution is that you can run multiple operating systems simultaneously --- no need to reboot and dead easy to share files and other resources between the systems.

Far simpler install Windows first. Then when you install Ubuntu, will notice Windows there and set the boot options you can choose the OS each boot. Windows (any version) will install though 's the only OS present, you install after Ubuntu you would have repair the Ubuntu boot setup.

Generally, with 9.10. The main hassle I've heard was upgrades from 9.04 with certain video cards.

9.04 fails for me. Try 9.10.

It really does not matter which OS you install first. I would first install Windows 7. Then, I would install Ubuntu, that way GRUB (or LILO, but I personally have never used LILO) will be the default bootloader. Next, you can create a new boot option in the GRUB menu and use chainloader to access the Windows partition.

My apologies for not being too detailed here, but if you take the time to research these ideas further and make a lot of mistakes along the way, my vague outline should start to make some sense

Also, be a man and don't use Wubi!

I use Ubuntu 9.04 with Windows 7 home premium.
I installed Windows 7 first as windows will mess up the GRUB bootloader that linux produces. You shouldnt have to add windows 7 to the bootloader manually.
