Hello, all. I have a Q6600 w/4G of RAM. I'm running XP 32-bit on it and I was curious how I could get as much memory available for prime95--mostly for when doing P-1 work.
Currently, I'm using the /3GB switch when starting up windows. This seems to allow Prime95 to use a bit more memory than it used to--with /PAE or without any options of that sort. Has anyone done any tinkering with this? I'm not inclinded to worry with it much at this point as the machine will probably be converted to Windows 7 and receive another 4G of DRAM in a month or two. But, there's probably a good 4 P-1 tests that will happen before then. We might as well make the best of it. :) Thanks. |

I recall having read somewhere in the forum that, at least under a 32 bits OS, anything over 1700Mb would be useless in terms of raising the probability of finding a factor. As for the speed of the test I´m not sure.

I assume you will run MS/Windows 7 in 64 bit mode then? Does w7 give you the option on a 32/64 bit capable CPU? Last fiddled with by lfm on 2009-10-06 at 23:29 |

I do not believe it's any different than Vista: 32- and 64-bit versions are different DVDs (although the same product key will work for either version). Hopefully the bias will be towards 64-bit this time.
