Either the CPU becomes unstable at high temperatures or the RAM isn't working reliably.

You could look at the CPU temperature (using some tool) while doing the torture test. And try using safer memory settings if they are tweaked somehow.

You should be able to find it in the same directory as the Prime95.exe file, if you installed it using the installer. If not, look in the ZIP package you downloaded.

The bottom line (and the bad news) is, it looks there's something physically wrong with your computer.

Perhaps it runs OK for ordinary things like word processing or so forth, but programs that put stress on your computer cause it to crash.

Prime95 is often used for "stress testing" computers because it really makes your CPU chip (the "brain" of your computer) work very hard. So sometimes computer manufacturers or software companies recommend running it purely for that purpose-- if your computer can run Prime95 successfully, it's a sign that it's in good shape.

Unfortunately your computer seems to have failed this test (and also fails with the video game). Some of its parts may be bad or unreliable: the memory (RAM) for instance. Or the inside of the case may not be cooled or ventilated properly, causing it to overheat when running a program that puts a lot of stress on your computer... CPU chips actually put out approximately as much heat as a light bulb, concentrated in an area the size of an oversized postage stamp.

There's a program called Memtest86 that can be used to test if your computer's memory is the culprit.

In general though, if you're not familiar with computers, your best bet is to take the computer to a shop and ask them to try to figure out what's wrong with it. It's hard to tell without examining it in person.

Sorry for the bad news.

Some people try to get extra speed out of their computers by "overclocking" and altering the memory settings in the computer's BIOS. This sometimes makes a computer more unstable and crash-prone, it's not something an average computer user would do. It's a "don't try this at home" thing, only done by enthusiasts who really know what they're doing (or think they do).

Dresdenboy was thinking that perhaps you or someone else had done this, and suggested changing the memory settings back to something safer (slower). However, from your description I doubt you altered anything in the first place. Sounds like you just got a bad computer from the store.

If you haven't taken your computer back and you want help post here again. I would post some info but the post date is a month old so I don't know if you are still needing help.
