I don't think so. There are proofs that there are unlimited prime numbers. The Mersenne numbers are hitting one of them 'by accident' - I don't see a reason that this won't be in the future.

Batalov was saying there is no M48. It is true there are an infinite number of primes... but it is not known if there are an infinite number of Mersenne primes. Although, if A is true then it is at least logical that B is true as well.

If there is at least another Mersenne prime number there is a M48. I'm understanding that primes are pseudorandomly distributed so I don't think of any reason why bigger mersenne numbers shouldn't hit some of the primes in the future.

Of course a reliable mathematical proof is something different and harder to do so - this is 'only' my understanding of mersenne primes.

The "main wave" seems to be around 45M - the number of first-time assignments drops off significantly after that.

I think "when" will be based on technology and programming. I don't feel any of the current CPU's could deal with it very well, time-wise. P95 assigns each core a different exponent. Perhaps that needs to be turned around: A single exponent for multiple cores to work on. I don't know what the current core limit is in P95. I know several individuals with dual quads (8 cores). One, I've been trying to get him to join.

I did some pencil scratching with the dates of prior discoveries. It varies a lot, and you are correct. The longest I gap I found was 25 months, I think it was. More recently, there were some around seven months apart.

For the record, I do not believe in all the 2012 hype.
